In 1935, Paris, David Talbot, a respected diplomat, is accused of being Jean Pelletier, a notorious bank robber and murderer from 1922. Despite being cleared, Talbot becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth, as a mysterious letter claiming he owes FF1 million to Pelletier's partners threatens to ruin his reputation and marriage to Lucienne.
