Claire Trevor was born Claire Wemlinger in Brooklyn, New York, to Noel Wemlinger, a French immigrant, and his Belfast-born wife, Benjamina. She was the only child and developed an interest in acting at the age of 11. Trevor attended high school in Mamaroneck, New York, and later took classes at Columbia University and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
