Jesse Conner runs a California ranch with his ailing wife Maggie, daughter Linda, and son Buddy, who has special needs. When a ranch hand is murdered, Jesse hires Susan to fill the position. Linda is suspicious of Susan, who seems to know the ranch's secrets. As tensions rise, Maggie falls off a ladder and is hospitalized, where she's recognized by a nurse who knows Susan's true identity as Karen, Maggie's long-lost daughter given up for adoption. Karen's true intentions are revealed as she seeks revenge on Maggie for giving her up.
