In Taiwan, a mysterious illness spreads just before the year 2000, prompting authorities to order a mass evacuation. However, some residents of an apartment building, including a solitary shop owner, refuse to leave. A plumber's visit to the shop owner's apartment sets off a chain of events when he drills a hole in the floor, which creates a hidden passageway between the apartments, causing tension between the shop owner and the woman living below.
