Two greedy peasants, Tahei and Matashichi, are returning home after a failed attempt to profit from a war between neighboring clans in feudal Japan. They encounter a defeated tribe's remnants, including a famous General and a Princess, hiding in a mountain fortress. The General and Princess need to escape to allied territory with their gold to rebuild their clan. They trick the peasants into helping them, promising a share of the gold upon arrival.
