A group of friends, academics at the University of Montreal, gather at a lakeside home for dinner. The hosts, Rémy and Louise, have been together for 20 years, but Louise knows Rémy cheats on her. The group includes a divorced couple, a single man, a graduate student, and a mother. They discuss sex, shaped by their academic backgrounds. A ninth person, Diane's S&M partner Mario, joins the group. As the evening progresses, they listen to a radio interview about the decline of society in the pursuit of individual happiness.
