A struggling boxer, Rocky Balboa, seeks to elevate his career, working as a debt collector for a meager income. When heavyweight champion Apollo Creed visits Philadelphia, his managers arrange an exhibition match between Creed and a lowly boxer, billing the fight as a chance for an "unknown" to become a "legend". Despite being heavily favored to win, Creed's opponent, Rocky, sees this as his only opportunity to rise to the top.
