A young Oklahoma graduate trades in his textbooks for a life of adventure at sea, enlisting in the US Coast Guard and taking on the role of cook on a Boston-based ship in 1941.

A young man joins the US Coast Guard after his girlfriend rejects his commitment proposal, and finds himself stationed on a ship in Boston. He meets a beautiful woman, Stella, but she refuses to stay with him after he rents a hotel room. Despite challenges from his superior, Al proves to be a skilled cook and learns valuable lessons about doing the right thing, all while navigating a changing world after the Pearl Harbor attack.
