Quentin Collins, a newlywed, inherits the historic New England estate Collinwood and moves in with his wife Tracy. They invite their writer friends, Alex and Claire Jenkins, to live on the estate rent-free. Quentin, an artist, searches for a space to paint, seeking inspiration. The strict housekeeper Carlotta Drake recommends the tower room, where Quentin discovers many paintings. However, he soon experiences disturbing visions and nightmares, including a young woman hanging in a tree and a girl holding a doll. As Carlotta shares more information, Quentin's behavior becomes increasingly erratic, putting his and Tracy's lives at risk.
