A 46-year-old widow, Diane Després, has been struggling to make ends meet after her husband's death. She has a 15-year-old son, Steve, who has ADHD and a history of violent outbursts. Diane decides to take Steve out of his institution and care for him herself, but this means giving up her job and relying on home-based work. As she navigates her new responsibilities, she must also contend with her son's violent tendencies and her own feelings for a lawyer, Paul, who is trying to help Steve with his legal problems. Meanwhile, their neighbors, Kyla and her family, are dealing with their own emotional issues and may find that they need the Després just as much as they need them.
