In post-independent India, Puran rescues a family and is hired to work on their farm, where he falls in love with the daughter, Neelu. When a mysterious man, Kamal, is injured and joins the family, Neelu and Kamal fall in love, much to the dismay of the family's employer. Kamal's past as a convicted killer is revealed, and he is forced to leave, but not before Neelu is diagnosed with a serious heart condition. Puran travels to Bombay to find Kamal, and after learning of Neelu's condition, Kamal tries to convince her to reconsider marrying him. Neelu recovers and returns to Bombay, only to find that Kamal is arrested on their wedding day, and Puran is suspected of betraying him.
