Detective Landers investigates a murder at a sleazy Los Angeles hotel, despite being unable to officially assign himself to the case. He takes a "vacation" to the Glorietta Springs Hotel, where he meets the bartender, Andy, and the cigarette girl, Jo Ann. Following a tip from Jo Ann, he discovers a piece of telephone wire leading to Andy's room and learns that Andy was medically discharged from the Navy due to diabetes.
