In the midst of World War I, a group of American youths volunteer for the French military, becoming the first U.S. fighter pilots and forming the legendary Lafayette Escadrille. The story follows four pilots, each with their own distinct background: a laconic Texas rancher, a eager Nebraska kid, a Black boxer already in France, and a charming New York socialite. As they face their first mission, they're ambushed by German planes, leading to a baptism by fire. As they gain experience, they become heroes, and one of them, the Texan, falls in love with a young woman he meets at a brothel.
