Thirteen-year-old Molly Roth, the eldest of three, lives a carefree life in affluent South Africa under apartheid. Despite her family's white privilege, she feels comfortable around black people, unaware of her parents' underground anti-apartheid work. After her father escapes and her mother is detained without charge, Molly's life unravels. She misses her mother and resents the impact of their activism on her life. As she navigates the situation, Molly gains a broader perspective on apartheid and her mother's work, which changes her outlook.
