Friedrich Nietzsche witnessed the whipping of a horse in Turin, Italy, and shortly after was diagnosed with a serious mental illness. The film follows the story of the horse's fate in a fictionalized tale. The horse, an old and sickly one, is forced to work by a rural farmer who uses it for carting jobs. The farmer and his daughter must come to terms with the horse's impending death and the end of their livelihood.
