David Gale, a successful intellectual and head of the philosophy department at the University of Texas, is falsely accused of rape by a former graduate student, Berlin. Despite the charges being dropped when Berlin disappears, Gale's life is destroyed, and he loses his marriage, career, and custody of his son. Years later, a journalist named Bitsey Bloom investigates the case and discovers that Gale's friend, Constance, was not murdered, but rather died of terminal leukemia and committed suicide. However, the murder was staged to frame Gale, and he was wrongly convicted and sentenced to death.
