In 1935-36, Professor Melvin Tolson inspires Wiley College's debate team to a nearly-undefeated season, despite the challenges of Jim Crow and sexism. The team, featuring a female student and a young James Farmer, faces off against Harvard's national champions and navigates a heated environment marked by a lynch mob, arrest, and national radio broadcast.
