A storm wrecks a ship carrying David Robinson to a penal colony, stranding his family on a deserted island. His son Jacob is separated from the family and raised by pirates. The family adapts to their new environment, building a shelter and learning to survive. When Jacob's pirates kidnap a sea-captain's daughter, Emily, she escapes and becomes a love interest for two islanders, Fritz and Ernst. Eventually, Jacob is reunited with his family, and Emily is returned to her father. The family members ultimately go their separate ways, with some choosing to stay on the island and others returning home.
