In this movie, a young woman's mother places immense importance on her daughter's debutante status, causing tension between them. The mother's obsession leads the daughter to refuse her choice of a prestigious suitor, instead choosing a Latino man she barely knows. The mother and her preferred suitor then attempt to prevent the daughter's "social suicide" from occurring.
