Francie Lawrence, known as Gidget, and her boyfriend Jeff Matthews are spending their last summer together before he goes back to college. Gidget's parents plan a family vacation to Hawaii, which disrupts their time together. Despite meeting new boys, including celebrity Eddie Horner, Gidget is unhappy in Hawaii. Her father decides to surprise her by bringing Jeff to the island, but Gidget catches him in the arms of another girl, Abby Stewart. As Jeff seeks revenge, Gidget's life becomes complicated.
