In 1959, two actresses, supported by US troops and later the US government, launch a charity for mixed-race "orphans" who are shunned by their local communities. This charity, Childhelp, eventually establishes multi-disciplinary centers for abused and neglected children in the US. One of these children is Jacob Fletcher, a bright and traumatized boy whose stepfather, a lawyer, had terrorized him. After serving 10 months in jail, Jacob's stepfather tries to reclaim him.
