In the desolate Diamantina Mountains of Brazil, 1821, a slave trader named Antonio returns to his inherited farmhouse to find his wife has died in childbirth. He marries his 12-year-old niece Beatriz, a child bride, and leaves her behind to continue his trading expeditions.
