The movie takes place during the Great Depression. A bank robber, Ben Harper, hides $10,000 in his daughter's doll before he's caught and executed. After his death, a con man named Harry Powell tries to find the money by marrying Ben's widow, Willa, and manipulating her into revealing the location of the cash.
