The Assisi Underground background

The Assisi Underground

In the midst of World War II, a courageous friar and a compassionate bishop collaborate to establish a secret network, successfully rescuing hundreds of Jews from the clutches of the Nazi regime in the Italian town of Assisi.

In World War II, a Franciscan friar named Father Rufino organized an underground operation in Assisi, Italy, to hide and help Jews escape to freedom. He enlisted local people to create fake documents and established hideouts in convents, monasteries, and homes. By war's end, thousands of Jews had been saved through the Assisi underground, earning Father Rufino, Bishop Nicolini, and Don Aldo Brunacci the title of Righteous Gentiles from the government of Israel.
