In December 1975, a newlywed couple, George and Kathy Lutz, buy a waterfront colonial in Amityville, New York, unaware of its dark history. The house was the site of a mass murder, where Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed his parents and four siblings in 1974. As the Lutz family settles into their new home, they begin to experience strange visions and hallucinations, and soon realize that the house is haunted by malevolent forces.
