Life on the peaceful South Seas island of Pago Pago is disrupted when a boat carrying two missionary couples, the Davidsons, and a prostitute named Sadie Thompson arrives. When the boat is stranded due to a cholera outbreak, Sadie befriends American soldiers on the island, causing tension with the Davidsons. Mr. Davidson, a zealous missionary, tries to redeem Sadie, but she rebels, leading to a series of unexpected events culminating in disaster.
