In 1941, under Japanese occupation, a school teacher named Fang Lan and her mother struggle to survive in a small flat in Wanchai. Lan's life takes a drastic turn when she joins the Dongjiang guerilla unit, led by Captain Blackie Lau, to rescue cultural figures from the besieged city. Her mother, who takes Lan's place as a courier, is arrested, forcing Lan to turn to Wing, who now works for the Japanese, to save her.
