Harvey Milk's life is chronicled through late-life recordings and archival footage, revealing his journey from his 40th birthday to his tragic death. He leaves his closeted life and New York, opening a camera shop that becomes a hub for San Francisco's growing LGBTQ+ community. He also harnesses the community's collective purchasing power to forge political alliances. With his partner Scott Smith as his campaign manager, Milk runs for office, finally achieving victory on the same day Dan White wins in a conservative district. The film also explores Milk's complex relationship with White and the 1978 fight against a statewide initiative to ban LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies from public school jobs.
