Frank Zito, a troubled individual, grapples with the loss of his abusive mother, who was murdered in a car accident. He becomes fixated on keeping her memory alive by killing young women and displaying their scalps on mannequins in his apartment. When he meets photographer Anna D'Antoni, he becomes fascinated with her and wonders if she might be the mother figure he's been searching for, or just another substitute.
