An aging Hollywood star, Joe Scott, is haunted by the death of his childhood best friend, Boots. The memory of their youth is triggered, taking the audience back to a seaside town in 1970s Britain, where Joe was a teenage boy in a complicated relationship with Ruth. The story then jumps back to contemporary Hollywood, where Joe must confront his past and return to England to meet Ruth, who is now a widow after Boots' passing.
