Ex-con Joe Braxton gets a second chance at freedom when schoolteacher Vivian Perry hires him to drive a group of special-education kids from Philadelphia to their new home at Washington Farm. As Joe bonds with the children and Vivian, he transforms his outlook on life, but their journey is threatened by social worker Donald, who wants to send the kids back to Philadelphia.
