American Commune background

American Commune

The documentary "Commune" explores the lives of 1,500 hippies and their guru Stephen Gaskin, who abandoned mainstream society in 1970 to create a self-sufficient community in rural Tennessee.

Raised in a rural Tennessee commune founded by Stephen Gaskin in 1970, filmmakers Rena and Nadine return to their past after leaving in 1985. They explore the rise and fall of America's largest utopian socialist experiment and their own family tree, revealing the destruction of a community that was partly caused by its own success.
