A Soviet cargo ship, Nezhin, transports a large shipment of opium from the Philippines to Vladivostok. En route, the crew rescues a man named Saleh, who claims to have escaped from a burning cargo ship carrying cotton. As Nezhin approaches an abandoned ship, Mercury, Captain Ivan Ilyich sends a team to investigate. However, Saleh secretly gains access to the radio room and attacks the operator, disabling the radio communication.
