As World War II nears its end, a small group of American soldiers takes up residence in an ancient castle. While their commander becomes embroiled in a romantic affair with the castle's countess, the soldiers' personal lives become increasingly entangled. One soldier develops an unexpected attachment to a Volkswagen, while another finds himself in a romantic triangle with a baker's wife. Meanwhile, a group of shell-shocked soldiers wander the war-torn streets, and a GI art historian struggles to protect the castle's priceless masterpieces.
