Scott Wilson was born on March 29, 1942, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was awarded a basketball scholarship to Southern Tech University, but instead, he hitchhiked to Los Angeles and began studying architecture. Wilson's early career took off when he was discovered by director Norman Jewison, who cast him in the 1967 film "In the Heat of the Night" alongside Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. He then co-starred in "In Cold Blood" (1967),a critically acclaimed film based on Truman Capote's best-selling novel.

Wilson's subsequent film work included "Castle Keep" (1969),"The Gypsy Moths" (1969),"The Grissom Gang" (1971),"The New Centurions" (1972),"The Great Gatsby" (1974),"The Ninth Configuration" (1980),and "The Right Stuff" (1983). He also appeared in TV shows such as "The X-Files" and "The Twilight Zone," and had a recurring role in "CSI."

In his later years, Wilson continued to work in film and television, appearing in projects such as "The Walking Dead" (2010),"Damien" (2016),and "The OA" (2016). He was diagnosed with leukemia and passed away on October 6, 2018, at the age of 76.
