A virtuous governess, Henriette Deluzy, is hired to educate the children of the Duc de Praslin, a royal subject of King Louis-Philippe. However, her new position is met with hostility from the duke's wife, the Duchesse de Praslin, who is consumed by jealousy and becomes obsessed with keeping her husband away from Henriette. Despite this, Henriette forms a strong bond with the children, particularly the duke's son, who she saves from a life-threatening illness. The duke and Henriette's mutual attraction eventually leads to a tragic outcome.
