In the remote Australian town of Tiboonda, a teacher named John Grant is bound to his government job by a financial contract. Just before Christmas, he plans to visit his girlfriend in Sydney, but first, he takes a train to the mining town of Bundanyabba, also known as "The Yabba", to spend the night before continuing to the airport. However, his plans quickly unravel as he becomes immersed in the strange and unsettling culture of the Yabba and its eccentric residents.
