Renowned detective Philo Vance is tasked with solving the murder of a man known as "Cock Robin", whose body is discovered on an archery range with an arrow in his heart and a cryptic chess bishop clue.

Philo Vance investigates a series of murders, each with a body posed and a nursery rhyme note left at the scene, signed by 'Bishop'. The only potential witnesses, Mrs. Drukker and Adolph, remain tight-lipped. As Vance digs deeper, he must decipher the cryptic clues to uncover the killer's true identity.
