In the 1990s, MI5 recruits civilian informants in Shropshire to counter IRA attacks. Students Ian, Sophie, and Mae are recruited by Robert, but soon find themselves in hiding. Nine years later, Robert works as a car salesman and marries Alice, a London lawyer. When Alice discovers his fake identity, Robert reveals himself as an MI5 officer, but new inconsistencies emerge, including allegations of Sophie's kidnapping. Robert disappears, leaving behind a trail of secrets and deceit.
