In this movie, a noble escort brings a cunning thief and his deputy to a remote temple in search of a valuable handwritten scroll created by Tripitaka. Coincidentally, a military general and his second-in-command also arrive at the temple, also seeking the scroll. As fate would have it, both groups are invited to help the ailing Abbot choose his successor, with the noble escort and the general supporting different senior disciples.
