Recently widowed Mrs. Palfrey moves into a London residential hotel, where she hopes to make the best of her new life and visit with her grandson, a London resident. After slipping on a walk and being helped by a young writer named Ludo, she invites him to dinner and plays along when her friends assume he's her grandson. A friendship develops between Mrs. Palfrey and Ludo, giving her a companion to share memories and poetry with, and him ideas and support for his writing.
