In South Africa on the cusp of apartheid's end, a 12-year-old Xhosa boy named Thembile befriends a puppy, but their bond is soon tested when the white landowner's cruel actions turn the dog against him. Ten years later, Thembile has grown into a strong young man, the dog is now full-grown, and the aging landowner joins them for a fencing repair trip.
