Based on the cult Broadway musical of the 60s, the film follows Claude, a young man from Oklahoma who leaves his small town for New York City and finds himself entwined with a group of free-spirited hippies led by Berger. As Claude becomes smitten with Sheila, a girl from a wealthy family, their whirlwind romance is cut short when Claude receives his draft notice and is forced to confront the harsh realities of the Vietnam War.
