Solange, a depressed woman, has lost her appetite and smile. Her husband Raoul tries to save her by hiring a stranger, Stephane, as her lover. Despite Stephane's efforts, Solange remains unresponsive, finding solace in knitting and housework. Despite everyone's advice, including a vegetable vendor, that she needs a child, Solange fails to conceive with either lover.
