In a small Bavarian town, four brothers live with their mother, Mother Bernle. One of the brothers, Joseph, receives a job offer in America and decides to take it, but it's expensive to get there. Mother Bernle secretly gives him the money he needs. Joseph leaves for the USA, where he runs a deli with his new wife, Annabelle. When America enters the war, Joseph enlists and reunites with an old friend, the iceman from the deli. However, back in Burgendorf, Mother Bernle faces accusations of being the "mother of a traitor" after her son Joseph joins the American army.
