Dee Dee returns to her hometown with her 11-year-old son Trooper, rekindling old friendships and forming new bonds with the town's residents. She sets up a candle-making business and becomes close friends with Lydia, the wife of her childhood best friend Sam, who is now a veterinarian. As Dee Dee's health begins to decline, she confides in Sam about her terminal illness and asks him to help find a suitable adoptive family for Trooper. Sam and Lydia decide to adopt Trooper themselves, should the need arise.
