Craig Schwartz, a puppeteer, and his wife Lotte, a pet store clerk, are struggling in their marriage. Craig's passion for puppeteering is matched by his ability to inhabit the skin of others, which he takes to a new level when he starts working at LesterCorp. He discovers a hidden door in the filing cabinet, leading to John Malkovich's mind, and becomes fascinated by the experience.
