In Beijing, a young man named Guei moves to the city from the countryside, where he is struck by the contrasts of urban life. He takes a job as a messenger and is issued a bike, which he must pay for out of his wages. When the bike is stolen, Guei sets out to retrieve it, leading to a confrontation with the student who took it, Jian. For Jian, the bike is a symbol of his status and his desire to fit in with his peers, and he is unwilling to give it up. The two young men, along with those around them, become caught up in the desperation and tension of their situation.
