In 1952, Charles Freeman marries Mary and they have four children, but beneath the surface, their seemingly perfect life is marred by Mary's growing exhaustion and disillusionment. She finds comfort in poetry and drink, but ultimately takes her own life, leaving her family shattered and each sibling to forge their own destiny.
