Three acquaintances, the narrator and Tom and Richard, embark on a fateful night, encountering two other men. Despite not being close friends, they frequent each other's company, engaging in petty criminal activities. After leaving a dance, where the narrator was caught kissing a woman whose boyfriend, Caplan, he feared, they stumble upon a man asleep in the backseat of his car. The man appears to be deaf-mute. The group decides to take him home, but the woman at the first house he directs them to refuses to let him in.
